La Crosse Public Library Writing Workshops

All workshops are from 6:30 to 7:30 pm in the La Crosse Public Library Auditorium unless otherwise noted.

Workshop A - Nancy Ellingson

Writer, painter and teacher Nancy Ellingson lives in La Crosse, Wisconsin and has taught Art and/or English, including creative writing and literature in La Crosse Schools, Winona State University and UW-La Crosse.

This three-session poem writing workshop has no requirements other than the desire to write, learn and share. Bring a notebook, pen and some excitement.

Description: we will discuss the nature of poetry and its relationship to form. With these qualities in mind, we will look more deeplly into our own writing and experiment with some new directions.

Session I Thursday, Nov. 15 - Discussion of poetry and guided writing/drafting assignment

Session II Monday, Nov. 19 - Sharing of poem drafts/focused comments (NOTE: this session is at the South Community Library)

Session III Thursday, Nov. 29 - Polished poems - reading/focused comments

Optional - Online editing, printing for group, reading of poem's final draft at a 4th session.

Workshop B - Lynne Valiquette

Lynne Valiquette has facilitated poetry workshops for beginning writers of al ages. She currently teaches online classes for the Wisconsin Center for Academically Talented Youth. She and Nancy Ellingson are on the steering committee for "Mark My Words Again," a collaborative effort of the Pump House Regional Arts Center and the La Crosse Public Library to connect our writing and visual arts communities.

Description: This poetry writing workshop is designed as a springboard for those wishing to enter the La Crosse Public Library's Poetry Contest. Specific attention will be given to the role of image in poetry with the poems of Lorine Niedecker as our inspiration.
